I saw the toll it took on her to always ask for help with what she saw as such a simple task. It was just another step in her loss of independence. I began to change out her necklaces, using larger and larger clasps. It helped in the short term. Then, her lack of strength and range of motion would not allow her to lift her arms to neck level. 

Determined to give her the opportunity to help her help herself, I began thinking through all the issues with traditional jewelry and why we unwillingly stop wearing it – no matter our age – no matter the reason. You may have given up because of the small parts; you live alone with no one to help close your necklace or you have a temporary disability or permanent disability. Broken arm, Arthritis, Long Nails - and the list went on and on. 

I began testing solutions until I figured out one that really works: a jewelry component system with an adjustable length chain, one that easily (and stylishly!) closes in the front and has simple interchangeable pendants. And ChangeOut Jewelry was born!
