My mother, her love of wearing jewelry and
- loss of mobility to reach behind her neck;
- the loss of dexterity to work a simple clasp.
It marked another milestone in her gradual loss of independence. I started replacing her necklace closures with larger clasps. Initially, it provided some relief, but eventually, her diminishing strength and restricted range of motion made it impossible for her to lift her arms to necklace level. So, when I describe it as ‘created with love; born of necessity,’ you can understand the underlying passion and determination.
Driven by the desire to empower her, I pondered the challenges of traditional jewelry that lead us to abandon it, regardless of age: the tiny components, the struggle of closing a necklace when living alone, long nails, arthritis, or temporary and permanent disabilities—the list seemed endless.
I embarked on a journey of experimentation, seeking a solution that seamlessly blended adaptive functionality with style. The result? A jewelry component system featuring an adjustable necklace chain, elegantly closing at the front, and adorned with interchangeable pendants.
Although my mother wouldn’t live to witness the final design, it exists now—for you or someone dear to you. The ChangeOut Adaptive Jewelry System represents a small step toward mobility and dexterity independence.
